Department of Life Sciences

Life Sciences UFR

A multidisciplinary component covering all the fields of biology.

The life sciences department offers a broad and highly-regarded fundamental and multidisciplinary training, designed to enable students to integrate the biology MA programmes of UPMC and of other universities.

Through the acquisition of fundamental concepts and a training in the use of methodological tools, this academic approach also aims to equip future graduates of both degree and MA courses with the ability to adapt to the various different professional situations they may encounter.

The department also offers, for secondary school teacher training, one of the best university courses in France for the agrégation (high-level competitive examination for the recruitment of teachers) and the CAPES (certificate of aptitude for secondary school teaching), both internally and externally. Teacher training for secondary education is covered within the framework of the science and technology degree, on the course called ‘fundamental, natural and experimental sciences’.

In the area of research, the 24 host laboratories are grouped, in their majority, within the Institute of Integrative Biology.

6 doctoral schools are linked to the department.

Every year the life sciences department organises, together with the Pierre et Marie Curie faculty of medicine and the Marine Sciences Center, the "biological and medical research day".

In 2008 it was also responsible for organising a conference on stem cells, a research field in which it will be investing, in collaboration with the Pierre et Marie Curie department of medicine, as part of an integrated approach to their respective research activities and via the development of networks of technological platforms.

The area of neurosciences will be strengthened with the development of RTRA School of Neurosciences of Paris Ile-de-FranceNouvelle fenêtre of which UPMC is the founder.
