OEM specialization (Oceanography and Marine Environments)

Overall goal of training: to train highly qualified students through a multidisciplinary approach in the fields of biological oceanography, ecology and marine biogeochemistry, both from a conceptual point of view and methodology.

Competence
  • Acquisition of cultural knowledge enable a multidisciplinary approach of the Marine Environment. This baggage includes tools and a coherent set of specialized knowledge on the processes which the ocean system is the seat and how human societies have changed and continue to change. It leads to an ability to analyze and / or model complex situations by implementing appropriate tools
  • Ability to search for information
  • Ability to implement a project team
  • Ability to communicate findings in French and in English

Operational objectives:

  • To know the physical, chemical and biological that regulate biogeochemical cycles
  • To understand the mechanisms that regulate the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems
  • To master the methods of investigation and analysis of the marine realm
  • To understand the human impact on populations and marine ecosystems

It will initially offer students a licensed elementary knowledge in oceanography, then a second time, compare them with the latest developments of research in the field. This specialty is based both on a number of research units on the Jussieu campus and the three ocean observatories of UPMC (Banyuls / Mer, Roscoff, Villefranche / mer). This community has significant expertise and varied and can cover the main fields of scientific fields studied, to ensure an immersion in research laboratories and provide students direct contact with the marine environment essential.

Opportunities

Preparation of a doctorate in oceanography opening a research career in large organizations for fundamental or applied research, affected by the marine environment.

Setting environmental consulting firms or local authorities, as well as in cell environment of private or public companies.

Organization

The first semester is common to all students of the specialization. A specialization may take place early in the second half, the specialtyUE are proposed  in the 3 ocean observatories of UPMC and the Jussieu campus. A 2-month internship will complete the semester.

Semester 3 is available as 4 path training of reference:

  • Path 1: ocean environment;
  • Path 2: coastal environment;
  • Path 3: human impact, management and conservation of marine environments;
  • Path 4: modeling and data analysis.

The training courses are available in the form of mandatory UE for validation of the course and free UE. To these 4 courses adds the ability for students to carry out opening UE outside of training.

Semester 4 will be executed through a 5-month internship in a laboratory or a company.

Duration and pace of the course: 24 weeks of 5 days per year at 30 hours of classroom instruction per week.

For semesters 2 and 3, the teaching units are blocked for periods of 3 or 6 consecutive weeks, for a volume of 60 or 120 hours of classroom teaching.

The classes of semester 3 are taught in English.

Well-targeted public

People who have at least a license or an equivalent degree in biology, environmental science or chemistry, and students in second or third year of engineering schools with expertise in these disciplines.

Admissions

In first year, hold at least a license or an equivalent degree in biology, environmental science or chemistry.

In the second year, hold at least a master's or equivalent degree with the theoretical and practical semesters 1 and 2 training. If you want to integrate the Oceanography and Marine Environments specialization in the first or second year, you must send a supplementary file nomination papers.
