From lectures to the pool: a synchronised path for Lila!

Lila Messeman Bakir

Lila Meesseman-Bakir is a member of the French duo of the synchronised swimming team of France, which will represent France at the next Olympic Games in Peking. A student in year three of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, she tells us about her life both as a student and a high-level athlete.
‘Reconciling university studies and swimming was a balance that I had to ensure for myself. Because of my strong interest in chemistry and in order to pursue my studies in the best conditions, I chose UPMC, which is a partner of the National Institute of Sport and Physical Education (INSEP), which is a university which is particularly concerned with supporting high-level athletes. Thus, I could satisfy my passion for sport and take care of my future professional life in peace !
I take advantage of extra tutoring when I’m absent because of competitions. I can also catch up on practical sessions. Then, for assessments, it’s up to me to do the tests ! And having peace for this is important. Currently, I’m preparing for three important meets : the European championships in March in Eindhoven, the pre-Olympic tournament in April in Peking and, finally, the Games in August 2008. At the same time, I want to validate a semester of the third year of my bachelor’s degree in chemistry.
Eventually, I want to be able to do a master’s degree in order to become a cosmetic formulator. I would love to swim until the the 2012 games but my current preoccupation is to concentrate on this very rich year and enjoy the years to come as much as possible. I am currently doing my state certificate as a synchronised swimming coach. At the end of my career, I will certainly want to give coaching in order to pass on all the knowledge I gained after all these seasons spent in the water.’

Awards:
Lila was ranked 8th in the European Synchronised Swimming Championships in March in Eindhoven and 12th in the Olympic Games in Peking in 2008.
