The League of European Research UniversitiesNouvelle fenêtre (LERU) was founded in 2002 as an association of twelve research-intensive universities sharing the values of high-quality teaching within an environment of internationally competitive research. In 2006, membership was extended to twenty institutions, including UPMC.

LERU’s activities are focused on providing European-level advocacy concerning issues of importance to research-intensive institutions, and on fostering collaborative relationships between its member institutionsNouvelle fenêtre.

Committees, Working Groups and Communities, consisting of LERU Rectors or their deputies, are established as needed to help elaborate LERU policy positions. Recent activities have focused on doctoral study, research careers, research-based teaching and European research policy.

Membership in LERU, which is by invitation, is periodically evaluated against a broad set of quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as research volume, impact and funding, strengths in PhD training, size and disciplinary breadth, and peer-recognised academic excellence. UPMC participates in LERU alongside such prestigious universities as OxfordNouvelle fenêtre, CambridgeNouvelle fenêtre, Imperial College LondonNouvelle fenêtre and EdinburghNouvelle fenêtre (UK), Utrecht Nouvelle fenêtre(Netherlands), MunichNouvelle fenêtre (Germany), Universitat de BarcelonaNouvelle fenêtre (Spain) and the Karolinska InstituteNouvelle fenêtre (Sweden).
