Projects for the Future

Higher education and research fields have become competitive on a global scale. The Investment for the Future program, and its € 22 billion in funding, aims to promote scientific excellence, innovation and the strengthening of economic partnerships. A series of tenders were launched in 2010, to which UPMC responded as part of Sorbonne University, (our alliance with Paris-Sorbonne University, the National Museum of Natural History, INSEAD, the Compiègne University of Technology, the CNRS, INSERM, the IRD and Inria).

Sorbonne University has been awarded funding for its Initiatives of Excellence project “SUPER” (Sorbonne University in Paris for Education and Research). At the heart of the Latin Quarter, this comprehensive university will compete with the best universities in the world. SUPER aims to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century by promoting synergies between disciplines: in research to solve the complex problems of today's world; and in education to offer a solid grounding within a larger context, enabling students—right from the bachelor’s program—will develop the creativity, autonomy and the capacity for critical analysis that is necessary to become a responsible citizen today. The SUPER initiative will help attract top students and faculty to this world-class university campus, located in the heart of Paris.

LABORATORIES OF EXCELLENCE (LABEX): TRANSFORMATIVE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

UPMC is leading nine Labex that cover a variety of disciplines: CARMINE, devoted to mathematics; MATISSE, the study of matter; MiChem, a chemistry project; Bio-Psy, on psychiatric disorders; Transimmunom, dedicated to the study of immunity; ILP, the study the constituents of the Universe; Plas@par on plasmas; CalSimLab, on modeling and numerical simulation research; and SMART, on digital technologies.

The University is also involved in Labex that are managed by other organizations, for example, the ICFP project lead by the Physics Department at ENS, in which 40 percent of the researchers are from UPMC.

INNOVATIVE TREATMENT THERAPIES: THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL INSTITUTES (IHU)

The IHU are at the crossroads between research, patient care, translational results and education. The ICAN Institute will improve the combined management of cardiovascular disease, metabolism and nutrition, while A-ICM focuses on diseases of the nervous system such as Alzheimer's or epilepsy.

EQUIPEX: FOR ADVANCED EQUIPMENT

The entire French scientific community, as well as industry, will benefit from these facilities. Both Equipex projects are lead by UPMC: a network to test the future Internet (FIT) and an ocean observatory of ice and the atmosphere composed of fifteen platforms floating on the Arctic Ocean (iAOOS).

BIOTECHNOLOGY TO REPOND TO MAJOR SOCIETAL ISSUES

The national biology and health Infrastructure EMBRC-France includes three UPMC marine stations in a research consortium on marine biology and ecology. The University is also leading MAPPING, a bioinformatics project, which focuses on high-resolution mapping of protein interactions at the genome scale.

STRUCTURES DEDICATED TO RELATIONS BETWEEN RESEARCH AND ECONOMIC SECTORS: the SATT and the IRT

Strengthening university-industry partnerships at national and international level is also a major challenge for research in these major projects. This is why structures entirely dedicated to the relationship between the scientific world and the business world were created: SATT Lutech—a company dedicated to accelerating technology transfer, and a Technology Research Institute (IRT).

AN INITIATIVE PROJECT FOR EXCELLENCE IN  INNOVATIVE Education

Lead by UPMC, the TIL project will provide education in longevity and autonomy based on the transdisciplinary partner universities in France and Quebec.
