Institute of Doctoral Studies (IFD)

The purpose of the IFD, founded by UPMC in 2005, is to implement UPMC’s doctoral policy, by:

  • Coordinating and pooling the activities of the doctoral schools,
  • Organising the individual monitoring of each doctoral student in the process of obtaining their PhD, as part of an ongoing academic programme orientated towards their future social, economic or industrial environment, through the incorporation of supplementary courses,
  • Increasing doctoral supervisors’ awareness of this aspect of the career plan of doctoral students, through special courses,
  • Tracking the professional integration of young doctors and their career evolution, by noting the relevant statistics,
  • Promoting the added value of training through research,
  • Building awareness of all concerned about technological transfer, entrepreneurship and, more broadly, the development of regional, interregional, European and international cooperation.

Every year, the institute of doctoral studies (IFD) organises an induction day for new doctoral students and their doctoral supervisors in October and a day for doctors in June.

The IFD also publishes a monthly magazine, the IFDmag, which covers topics relevant to doctorates and current issues regarding doctorates at UPMC.
The activities of the IFD are not confined to UPMC. The IFD is involved in its own right in European debates on doctorates, in particular within the EUANouvelle fenêtre (European University Association), the LERUNouvelle fenêtre (League of European Research Universities) and the UNICANouvelle fenêtre (Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe).
