Shanghai 2014

A good year for UPMC!

The University reaffirms its ranking as the top French University

The 2014 edition of the Shanghai ranking was published as every year on 15 August. UPMC has confirmed its position as the top French research university, the 6th European, an it has increased slightly in the world standings, in the 35th position.

"The year 2014 was a good year for UPMC," says Jean Chambaz, president of UPMC. "Congratulations to research teams who are building their work this beautiful result. This classification, like all others, is open to criticism and can not be the only measure of the quality of a university. But the fact remains that it is a research performance indicator among others, and while the absolute value may have little meaning, its evolution over time is positive."

UPMC has progressed in mathematics as the 4th in the world and first in Europe, even before taking into account a share of the 2014 Fields Medal awarded to Artur Avila, CNRS research director at the Institute of Mathematics Jussieu Paris Rive Gauche (CNRS-UPMC-Paris Diderot). It also ranks higher this year in physics and engineering (which includes materials). In science, it remains 4th in Europe and 14th worldwide. It remains in chemistry and computer science, and loses some ground in life sciences and medicine. It is important to emphasize that hospital addresses are not taken into account in the Shanghai ranking, which in view of these results, confirms the importance of the correct UPMC reference in all scientific publications.
