Jean Chambaz Elected President of Sorbonne University

Jean Chambaz was elected President of Sorbonne University by the Board of Directors of the University on Monday, December 11, 2017.

Sorbonne University will be established on January 1, 2018, following the merger between the Paris-Sorbonne and the Pierre and Marie Curie Universities.

Supported by the group “REUNIS for Sorbonne University”, Jean Chambaz received 25 votes out of 36. Jean-Yves Masson, supported by the group “For the public service of higher education and research” (Pour le service public de l'enseignement supérieur et de la recherche) and Claude Montacié supported by the group “Together towards our new university” (Ensemble vers notre nouvelle université), also candidates for the presidency of Sorbonne University, have obtained 8 and 3 votes respectively.

The following day, Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017, the Faculty Boards completed their elections, with Corinne Aubert elected Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Alain Tallon Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and Bruno Riou Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

 

Jean Chambaz: professional background

Jean Chambaz has been President of Pierre and Marie Curie University since March 2012. In March 2016, he was re-elected for a second term ending on December 31, 2017. Previously, he was Vice-President Research and then Vice President of Ways and Means.

As a professor of Cell Biology at the Faculty of Medicine Pierre and Marie Curie, Jean Chambaz was head of endocrine biochemistry at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital. In 1999, he created a joint Inserm-UPMC research unit in the field of metabolism and intestinal differentiation, which later merged with the Cordeliers Research Center, where he was then deputy director.

In 2005, he created the Doctoral Education Institute at UPMC. From 2008 to 2011, he presided over the Council for Doctoral Education at the European University Association (EUA). Jean Chambaz was elected to the EUA board in 2015. He has also been president of the Coordination of research-intensive French universities (CURIF), since 2014.
