The scientific area covered under the "modeling and engineering" sector comprises pure and applied maths, informatics, mechanics, electronics, robotics and medical engineering. For each discipline, the work carried out ranges from fundamental research to applied research, this latter having various stages of completion.
The various disciplinary sectors enjoy guaranteed scientific autonomy (due in part to the physical distance imposed by the project, the laboratories involved being distributed over tens of different sites in the Paris region), but this grouping into one single sector does reflect the strong links that exist at the interfaces of the disciplines represented.
The existence of this sector is likely to favour the synergies between the different disciplinary sectors as well as joint initiatives with the 3 other research sectors of UPMC.
There are a wide variety of scientific challenges. Two immediately discernable topics are the essential fundamental research in a discipline, driven by the desire to increase the body of knowledge and application-orientated research in response to current social issues.
