Research unit on cardiovascular, metabolic and nutritional diseases (ICAN) - UMR_S 1166

ICAN-UMR_S 1166 was established January 1, 2014 for a 5 year period with INSERM and the University of Pierre and Marie Curie (UMPC) in Paris.

It brings together 6 internationally recognized research teams with complementary interests and approaches in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular and cellular biology, physiology and pharmacology to bear upon cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

These teams will ultimately be grouped together in the Medical School located at 91 boulevard de l’Hôpital.

Research activities

Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases are the principal cause of mortality in developed countries highlighting the need for a concerted effort to confront this problem.

These diseases share certain pathophysiological characteristics including diet, lifestyle, environment, genetic and epigenetic factors that contribute to disease progression and that are also the initial cause.

The UMR_S 1166 is founded on the idea that interactions between basic and clinical research is critical for future progress in understanding these diseases.

The research unit UMR_S 1166 is situated in the heart of the University Hospital at the Pitié-Salpêtrière, which is one of the largest hospitals in Europe and which has a longstanding action in cardiovascular and metabolic disease research and treatment.

The research unit is also associated with a larger group of research teams from the Cordeliers and Saint-Antoine research centers, coordinated by the University Hospital "Institute of Cardiometabolism And Nutrition" (IHU-ICANNouvelle fenêtre).

Teams and research themes

The UMR_S 1166 ICAN promotes interactions between its teams and recruitment of new teams. It brings together more than 160 professionals in 6 teams:

Team 1 "Genomics and Pathophysiology of Cardiovascular Diseases" headed by D.A. Trégouët

Team 1 focuses its research program on - identification of new genes and genetic variants associated to the susceptibility to rare or frequent cardiovascular diseases, - characterization of their functional roles at the molecular and cellular levels, - finding new pathophysiological mechanisms, in the ultimate goal of a better therapeutic management of patients. This research is built on the use of genetic and transcriptomic techniques ("Micro-array" and "Next-Generation-Sequencing") and on functional studies of identified genes/variants. The main studied diseases are cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias, coronary artery disease and venous thrombosis.

Team 2 "Biology and Pharmacology of Cardiovascular Remodeling " headed by J.S. Hulot

Team 2 focuses its research on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in cardiac and vascular remodeling under pathological conditions. This team combines gene transfer using viral vectors, transgenic animal models, important human bioressources and strong interactions with physicians and partners from the industry to develop a translational research.

Team 3 " Pathophysiology of Cellular Excitability" headed by S. Hatem

Team 3 focuses its research program on the identification of molecular mechanisms underlying cardiac ion channel trafficking and their role in the pathophysiology of cardiac arrhythmias with a strong emphasis on atrial fibrillation. Using cardiac myocyte electrophysiology, molecular imaging of living cells and experimental models of cardiac diseases, team 3 studies the mechanisms underlying cardiac remodeling, atrial excitability modifications and the substrate of atrial fibrillation.

Team 4 "Integrative Biology of Atherosclerosis" headed by P. Lesnik

Team 4 focuses its research on the lipido-inflammatory dimension of atherosclerotic vascular disease, the structure, metabolism and function of lipoproteins, the molecular genetics of cholesterol transport and homeostasis, and the systemic biomarkers of cardiometabolic diseases. This research has three main objectives: (i) to determine how lipids and immune cells crosstalk to influence atherogenesis, (ii) to determine the clinical relevance of novel mechanisms, genes, and biomarkers by studies of human diseases, and (iii) to evaluate and develop novel therapeutic approaches for inflammatory and metabolic disorders and atherosclerosis.

Team 5 "Biology of Stem Cells" headed by D. Sassoon and G Marazzi

Team 5 focuses its research on adult stem cells in a number of tissues ranging from the skin to muscle and vasculature to the central nervous system and heart. Using a multidisciplinary approach they examine an array of stem cell lineages to further the understanding of stem cell activation, cell fate and self-renewal and to integrate these functions into cell stress responses such as injury.

Team 6Nouvelle fenêtre "Nutriomics: Nutrition & Obesity - Systemic Approaches (NutriOmics)" headed by K. Clément

Team 6 focuses its research on pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of human obesity and its comorbidities via translational approaches and systems biology. Several aims are developed: i) to explore the perturbation in organ cross-talks and particularly the role of adipose tissue, ii) to find ways to better stratify the disease and improve cardiometabolic health by innovative therapies.
