Pierre and Marie Curie Laboratories in Two of Three European Consortiums for European Institute of Innovation and Technology

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), recently set up by the European Commission, announced a call in early 2009 for proposals for the creation of Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC).  KIC is based on three themes: Climate Change, Sustainable Energy and The Information and Communication Society of the FutureThe main mission of this organization is to strengthen European competitiveness by promoting coordination among actors of the “knowledge triangle”: higher education, research, and innovation.  Proposals from Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) were submitted.

After intense competition, two projects were selected: “EIT ICT Labs” and “Climate-KIC”.  Participants in these projects include Laboratiore d'informatique de Paris 6 (LIP6Nouvelle fenêtre)—a UPMC laboratory of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS)—and Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace (IPSL), which is made up of several laboratories under the joint supervision of UPMC.  LIP6 and IPSL will play a leading role in French participation.

EIT ICT Labs: Advancing Europe as the World Leader in Science and Digital Technology Innovation

EIT ICT Labs' project partners, supported by LIP6, want to reinvigorate the work of innovation to meet the great challenges of our society.  EIT ICT Labs has locations within five major geographic areas: Berlin, Eindhoven, Helsinki, Paris and Stockholm.  These sites will form the backbone of a wide-ranging international network of innovation.  They will also have the benefit of contributions from robust local and international ecosystems, bringing together both key players and a substantial community of highly innovative small and medium-sized businesses.  EIT ICT Labs will promote risk-taking and entrepreneurial aptitude among students, researchers, and engineers and it will help them identify new economic opportunities.  EIT ICT Labs will create conditions conducive to the emergence of sound companies and it will support them in their growth phase to insure that they become the  economic winners of tomorrow.  And EIT ICT Labs will make Europe the preferred place for ICT innovation and attract new talent, R&D departments from large companies and investors from around the world.

The French site is comprised of seven partners: UPMC, Alcatel-Lucent, France Telecom-Orange, Thomson, Institut national de recherche en informatique et automatique (INRIA), Université Paris-Sud 11 and Institut Telecom.
