Nuclear engineering specialization (M2 - PA)

Whether developing new technical reactor systems, processing and recycling fuels, scheduling closings of the original nuclear plants—this industry is thriving in France both technologically and commercially. But in the coming years, there will be an enormous challenge to find highly-qualified employees in this sector.
Pierre and Marie Curie University is positioned to meet this challenge and wants to play a crucial role in training a considerable number of graduate students in this sector.

The Master’s specialization aims to train students in UPMC’s areas of excellence in nuclear science: civil engineering, nuclear instrumentation, resources managements and waste storage modeling.

Opportunities

Typical opportunities for graduates lie in the broader engineering professions (research and development, operational production, etc.) within the fields of the nuclear sector, civil engineering, measurement and instrumentation and waste. Graduates of the nuclear engineering specialization become engineers that thrive in innovative high-tech sectors: R&D engineer after a PhD, research engineer, design engineer, project manager, etc. These nuclear engineering graduates usually join or lead project teams at major corporations, yet because of their versatility they also fill many different roles in innovation, production and management.

Organization

There are four semesters in this specialization with the first two based on the existing Master’s majors plus specific papers for students who want to attend the Nuclear Engineering specialization in M2.

The first year of the Master’s focuses on Physics and Applications (PA) and Engineering Sciences (ES). Graduates of the Science and Technologies Bachelor’s degree follow the core curriculum of one of these majors and choose introduction courses in Nuclear Engineering. PA students are also offered relevant courses from the M1 ES course throughout the two semesters of M1. The required papers serve as prerequisites for the M2 Nuclear Engineering specialization.

The first semester of M2 (S3 – September to December) begins with a core program designed to provide the fundamentals of nuclear reactors, nuclear thermodynamics, security features and the socio-economic issues in the nuclear sector. Some classes are taught by guest lecturers (INRSN (French National Institute of Scientific Research), INSTN (French National Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology), CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission), aso.). After the core papers are completed, students attend more specialized classes in their program of choice: Resources, Cycle and Waste or Safety, criticality, radiation-protection.

Well-targeted public

To be accepted into the M2 specialization, students must have successfully completed the first year of a Master’s in physics or have earned an engineering degree in physics.

Applications are accepted from mid-April to June.
