Fusion sciences specialization (M2)

Fusion science specialization became “Physics of Plasmas and Fusion” (PPF) and can be found at this addressNouvelle fenêtre.

This French specialization was created to support the international ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) and LMJ (Laser MégaJoule) projects, as well as thermonuclear fusion research. The range of programs provides students a solid base in fundamental, technological and experimental research. Dense and hot plasmas, x-rays, highly charged ions, nuclear energy, radiation, matter-radiation interaction, numerical modeling, matter and materials under extreme conditions, high power lasers, laser-plasma interaction, technology and maintenance of large-scale instruments and thermonuclear equipment: in all of these fields, the programs in this specialization federate skills from most of France’s laboratories, leading to a broad range of professional opportunities. Thanks to international activities in fusion science and, particularly, to high-level installations in France (Ile de France/Bordeaux/Cadarache), students from this master’s course can easily find positions in research teams or industry in France or abroad. They can specialize in theory, experimentation or technology according to their preferences.

Opportunities

Graduates in this specialization have multidisciplinary skills that can then be developed by doing a PhD They can go on to join teams working on large-scale instruments or in fundamental or applied research laboratories. They may also be hired in industries working on the Fusion program, laser technology, plasmas and radiation.

  • Research : MCF (Magnetic Confinement Fusion) ;
  • Research : ICF (Inertial Confinement Fusion Track) ;
  • Vocational : FPT (Track Physics and Technology of Fusion).
Well-targeted public

This French specialization course accepts students who have successfully completed the first year of a Master of Physics and those who have earned an engineering diploma majoring in physics.

Admissions

Applications to enter the Master’s program are accepted from mid-April to June.
