Biotechnology specialization (M2)

The specialization of "Biotechnology" from the "Molecular and Cellular Biology" master’s degree is a professionalising vocation. Its aim is to prepare and provide biology graduates for immediate entry into the key sectors of industries such as biotechnology, pharmaceutical and cosmetics, following their graduation.

Through the modules offered on this major, students will be taught; the complexity of the biotech industry, its key sectors, organisation and strategy. Equally, students will have the opportunity to identify current and future jobs that will be accessible to them, as well as learn the key skills of bio-businesses. Scientific lessons will focus on the biotechnology questions of tomorrow and offer a multidisciplinary approach to topics such as immunology, cell biology, genetics which are continuously needed in the field of biotechnologies. Seminars to identify the main areas of business activities (R&D, production, marketing, pharmacovigilance, quality, financing, promotion of research, industrial property, clinical research, strategic intelligence, bioethics...) are provided to the students of this specialization. The larger part of the discipline is taught under the responsibility of current expert professionals in the fields of the aforementioned business activities. Students are additionally asked to partake in biological conferences and exhibitions, as well as visit industrial sites in order for them to discover the way companies operate in a first-hand manner.

As part of the specialization, students are required to undertake a six-month work placement that can be exclusively held with biotechnological, pharmaceutical or cosmetic companies that have partnerships with the masters.

Programs of the Master’s

Two programs are offered during the second year of the master’s degree, depending on the location of the work placement: Master 2 "R&D French-Biotech" where the work placement is carried out in companies located in France, and finally Master 2 "R&D International-Biotech" where it is carried out in companies abroad. Such training will be performed with industrial partners within networks or parks of biotechnology companies.

Organization

Master 2 "R&D International-Biotech") with both sharing common units of specialization; a scientific project unit and a scientific analysis unit.

The lessons offered, occur during the first semester (September-December). In order to complete 30 ECTS during the first semester, students have the option of selecting a 6 ECTS module of choice from amongst those proposed by the "Molecular and Cellular Biology" master’s degree.

The contracted maximum 6-month internships are exclusively done in companies, and take place during the second semester (January-June).

COURS OF SPECIALIZATION (5V315, 12 ECTS)

Course content is provided as conferences, round tables, workshops and study cases. It is divided into three modules:

  1. Company knowledge
    • Company function: organisation, different business models, current and future    jobs in the biotechnology sector,
    • Business Intelligence: Strategic and competitive intelligence, intellectual property and regulation,
    • Economics: project financing, company creation, business development and marketing,
    • Development of new medicines and health products: pre-clinical research, clinical research and pharmacovigilance,
    • Quality: quality assurance and quality control,
    • Bioethics: legislation in France and abroad.
  2. Human formation
    • Knowledge and personal dynamics: knowledge, social skills and know-how, professional project,
    • Interpersonal communication,
    • Mobilisation to employment: prospecting tools and mock interviews.
  3. Technological and biological knowledge
    • Immunological engineering: antibody production, immunodetection, immunopurification, immune molecules and cells, monitoring immune responses and vaccine production,
    • Genetic engineering: recombinant DNA technology, microarray, transcriptome, genome mapping, mutation identification methods, transgenesis, genotoxic risks, gene therapy, molecular markers, recombinant protein production, viral and non-viral vectors,
    • Cell and tissue cultures: cellular models, parameters of the cell culture, stem cell culture and iPSC, cell culture bioreactors,

    • Analytical techniques: HPLC, mass spectrometry and quantitative PCR,
    • Major topics in biotechnology: stem cells, vaccines, therapeutic antibodies, immunotherapy, gene and cell therapies, biomarkers, development of nanotechnology, medtech, tissue regeneration 3D or 4D,…

SCIENTIFIC ANALYSIS COURS (5V051, 6 ECTS)

The scientific analysis unit is conducted in the form of project-based learning (PBL) or case studies carried out in teams.

SCIENTIFIC PROJECT COURS (5V091, 6 ECTS)

The scientific project cours is dedicated to the innovation and exploitation of research. Its purpose is to discover how an innovative project is driven; from the elaboration of a new offer to the results of research which are then transferred into a product or service that can then be placed on the market.
The work of this module is carried out in a group and supervised by tutors who are currently professionals in the biotechnology industry.

INTERNSHIP COURS (5V099, 30 ECTS)

As part of the major, a six-month internship (January-June) must be carried out exclusively in one of the partner companies of the major, located in France, Europe or the United States.

The variety of partner companies (drugs, vaccines, diagnostics, biomarkers, cosmetology, agribusiness, environment, medical devices,...) is used to offer students different orientations.

Well-targeted public

The master’s is offered to students who have passed their first year of a master’s degree in Biology. The master’s is also open to physicians, pharmacists and those with a life science background.

Career opportunities

Following the end of their studies, students will have access to various positions offered by biotechnology, pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies such as: R&D engineer, assistant project manager, assistant product manager, marketing business manager, quality engineer, sales engineer, clinical research associate, consulting engineer...
In some cases, students may be eligible for a PhD grant in a company with a CIFRE financing ("Industrial Conventions Training for Research")

Partnerships

  • Companies’ networks (France-biotech, Leem Biotech Committee),
  • Biotechnology Parks (Biocitech, Genopole®),
  • ESTBB (Biology-Biochemistry-Biotechnology high School),
  • Some partner companies: Sanofi Aventis, Sanofi Pasteur, Servier, Ipsen, Biomerieux, Merz pharma, Neovacs, GSK, Cellectis, Hybrigenics, Nokad, Stallergenes, InnaVirVax, Pierre Fabre, Genzyme, Transgenes, Episkin, Roche, LVMH, L’Oreal, Yves Rocher, Veolia...
