Biochemistry and Molecular Biology specialization (M2)

The “Biochemistry and Molecular Biology” specialization allows students from scientific and medical fields to acquire methodological and conceptual expertise in different areas of biochemistry: molecular biology and evolution, structural and functional genomics, proteomics, structural biology, molecular pharmacology and therapeutical chemistry, molecular engineering and biotechnologies.

This broad-based specialization, opened for biologists, addresses the molecular and supramolecular aspects of cellular events at the interface with physics and chemistry.

Various topics including structural architectures, mechanisms of action, metabolic pathways, dynamics and evolution of living are developed. We also depict the ability to intervene on the physiology processes under normal, extreme or pathological conditions, through the rational design, and/or identification of molecules, used as tools or for pharmacological purposes.

Opportunities

This specialization is designed for students wishing to work in basic or applied biology research in the life-and-health, food industry or chemistry-and-environment fields in the public sector (lecturers, research scientists, research engineers) or private sector (research and development in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics as well as biotech industry as project managers or data-managers).

Organization

The specialization is part of the “Molecular and Cellular Biology” Master, and develops specific concepts, methodological approaches and tools to describe and understand the molecular mechanisms behind fundamental biological processes at the level of cells, tissue and organisms.

 

The specialization offers 4 main programs:

  • “Biochemistry and Genetics of RNA” (shared course with the specialization of Genetics and epigenetics),
  • “Biology and pharmacology of ageing” (a more vocational course),
  • "Therapeutical Molecules and Targets” (organized in conjunction with the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle),
  • "Structural and Functional Proteomics" (with a Pasteur course option "Protein Biochemistry"). The PSF program can also be followed as part of the training "International Master in Life Sciences" (IMaLiS) of the Ecole Normale Supérieure - Paris.
Well-targeted public

The specialization is open to students of the "Life Sciences" department of UPMC, and other universities within the limits of host capabilities.

Chemists, physicists, doctors, pharmacists, veterinarians, as well as students from “Grandes écoles” and engineering schools can be directly included in M2, in the course of the specialization, after analysis of their academic record (resume, education history, training received, motivation, career plans and personal project).

Students can also integrate into second year of master, after consideration of their resume, the specialization "Physical and Biological Systems Concepts" shared with both the Mentions "Molecular and Cellular Biology" and "Physics and Applications".

Admissions

Fundamental and general knowledge of biology acquired in the Bachelor of Life Sciences and M1 course. For students from “Grandes écoles” or engineering schools, and chemistry, veterinary, pharmacy or medical students, admission to this specialization depends on their qualifications and interest in biology. The specialization is also available for continuing education.
