Master of Integrative Biology and Physiology

Thanks to progress in genomics, proteomics, transgenesis and human, animal and plant phenotyping methods, physiology and integrative biology have returned to the forefront of research concerns. Due to the need to renew senior teaching and research staff and the growing demand for scientific jobs in both the public and private sectors, there is a major education need in this field. Students of this Master’s degree learn to understand the mechanisms underlying the various physiological functions at every level of integration at which they appear: from the cell to the organism as a whole, in the normal and pathological states, in plants, animals and humans.

This major also gives an understanding of the emergence of all the main life functions throughout evolution.

Three international programs are offered.

This course teaches the scientific foundations of biology in different fields, to ensure students have a thorough general knowledge of theoretical and practical biology, as well as of their chosen specialization.

6 SPECIALIZATIONS ARE OFFERED FOR THIS MASTERS COURSE:

This specialization aims to give students a precise understanding of modern animal physiology and of the physiopathological mechanisms that lead to disease. It leads to biomedical research and associated professions. During the second semester, students focus on the major functions necessary for the homeostasis of the internal environment. In 2nd year (M2), students build on this base to understand the molecular and cellular origin of the pathologies covered in the specialization, and the current and prospective therapeutic means of combating these pathologies.

Neuroscience is a vast disciplinary field with major stakes are at play, both at the fundamental level (understanding the brain) and in terms of its multiple applications (for example in the health field). Spectacular progress has been made over the last few years, thanks in particular to the introduction of animal models which are varied phylogenetically, to the development of new mathematical and modeling tools, and to the improvement of brain-machine interfaces. These new approaches, which involve many disciplines of biology, physics, computer science, mathematics, cognitive psychology, etc., have thoroughly transformed the molecular analysis and the study of the most complicated physiological functions of the brain and the nervous system. At the national and international levels, if only because of the economic impact of diseases of the nervous system in health budgets, neuroscience is a strong focus of development.
Two programs are offered for this specialization:
-    Cellular and integrated neuroscience
-    Cognitive and behavioral neuroscience.

The aim of pharmacology is to discover medicinal drugs and to study their properties and the effect they have on living organisms, humans in particular, in view of their therapeutic administration and the limitation of any undesirable effects. The field is closely linked with normal and pathological physiology.
The Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology specialization aims to provide students with the conceptual and experimental bases of the study of medicinal drugs. Students increase their knowledge of drugs’ potential targets, their intended effects and side effects, and the identification of sources of variability, genetic and non-genetic, of the response to their administration in humans. Students also learn about methodological and regulatory aspects of the development of medicinal drugs, from both the academic and industrial points of view.

This course, which covers both plant and animal biology, uses an integrated approach incorporating classic aspects of the biology and physiology of organisms with recent approaches linking genomics and post-genomics (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, etc.). These approaches also link evolutive and environmental aspects in the compared biology of eukaryote lineages.
Firstly, the specialization covers the main components of the biology of the organism: functional architecture, integrated physiology and relations to the biotic and abiotic environment, and the dynamics and evolution of development. This first part of the course gives students the most up to date general skills in integrative biology, both theoretical and technical.
Students may then specialize in integrated plant biology, integrated biology of organisms or marine biology. These specializations, which use an extensive network of laboratories, technical centers and companies, qualify researchers in various fields of biology and biotechnology, as well as for animal and plant production.

This specialization gives students the skills necessary to evaluate the future strategic, economic and social issues of nutrition. Issues covered include research and development, the analysis of food-quality-health relations, the preventive role of food, evaluation and expertise, regulatory issues and the analysis of food risks and how to master them.
This course qualifies:
1- institutional and industrial researchers in the fields of nutrition and human nutritional pathologies. It complements scientific, medical, paramedical and pharmaceutical diplomas.
2- “nutrition-quality-health” managers for industry, local authorities and consulting agencies. Positions of responsibility and management can be exercised within the food industry, catering, retail, the pharmaceutical and health industries and for nutritional education.

This specialization has a double objective: firstly, to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms which underlie ageing; secondly, to understand the relation between the normal and pathological ageing of the main organs and functions. This means analyzing, on various models and on humans, the evolution of ageing over time and depending on environmental factors.

 

Well-targeted public

This Master’s major is intended for Bachelor of Science and Technology graduates having majored in life sciences or equivalent.

The major accepts medical, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering and veterinary students directly into second year (M2).

Admissions

Enrolment applications for Master’s Degrees are made from mid-April to June.
