Fluid Mechanics specialization (M2)

Numerical simulation is a major focus of the specialization, through thorough study of the methodology utilized and the practice of codes typically used in industry. The use of calculation is based on a thorough knowledge of theory and underlying models.

The Fluid Mechanics: Foundations and Applications specialization readies students for an engineering career in industry or research, with the possibility of undertaking a doctorate. It also actively prepares students for an international career, with a certain number of obligatory English papers. Exchange agreements with several prestigious foreign universities enable students to study abroad for a whole semester. These agreements are particularly active in Europe with Bristol (United Kingdom),  Delft  (The Netherlands), Bologna (Italy), Valencia (Spain) and in Asia (Beijing, Tokyo).

The specialization is open to students with a level equivalent to the M1 “Fluid Mechanics”. UPMC students following this course are strongly encouraged to do their internship abroad.

The specialization is run in conjunction with ENSAM, ENSTA and the Ecole Polytechnique. There is also a partnership agreement with SUPMECA.



Aerospace industry, land transport industry, nuclear (notably in thermohydraulics), chemical engineering, oil industry, thermal engineering, biomechanics, pharmaceutical industry, microfluidics.

A large proportion of fluid mechanics’ applications concern natural flows: meteorology and atmospheric phenomena, surface and depth geophysics, hydrology, oceanography, natural and urban environments…



This specialization has four specific programs:

  • Fluid mechanics (program entirely in English).
  • Fluid dynamics : from basics to complexity (certain papers are in English, but the program can be followed with French papers exclusively)
  • Modeling and the practice of calculating: this program prepares students specifically for industry with an internship which must be done in a company.
  • Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics.

And two programs in partnership with other Master’s majors:

  • Complex Systems and Hydrodynamics. This program does not have its own papers, and takes papers from the Engineering and Physics Masters.
  • Scientific calculating for Mechanics. This program is shared between Engineering and the Mathematics major.
