Master of Engineering

The engineering sciences are a group of complementary disciplines characterized by major interaction between research institutions and industry. In this context, electronics and mechanics are linked and often closely imbricated in many fields both in terms of fundamental research and applications. The goal of the degree is to offer a selection of courses which qualify graduates for either highly technical professions, or research jobs in business or in public and university laboratories.

Mechanics and electronics courses have always helped established links between the universities and grandes écoles of the Paris region (ENS Cachan, ENSAM, EP, ESPCI, ENST, ECP and ENSTA) interested in the same fields, and often serve as a fulcrum. One of the goals of this Master’s degree is to maintain and even develop these links, with the appropriate level of cooperation.

Competence

Discipline-specific prerequisites:

Have a thorough knowledge of electronics and mechanics in general and specialized knowledge in certain disciplinary fields

Master the basic techniques and the equipment used in electronics and mechanics

Know how to apply them in the different disciplines

Know how to set up and run experiments

Know how to manage bibliographical resources (databases, online scientific journals, …) and master the scientific literature related to the relevant field

Ability to summarize

Know how to make a critical analysis of scientific results

Know how to use own knowledge and be creative to identify and then resolve a scientific problem

General prerequisite skills:

Ability to learn and to adapt

Know how to organize work and work in a team

Know how to communicate results (oral presentation, posters, written reports) and defend a project against detractors,

Be able to appreciate the quality and pertinence of a study or a scientific approach whether or not it is your own work,

Master scientific English (certified level B2)

This master’s degree also aims to give students a solid theoretical and practical education which will enable them to find employment easily both in France and abroad. Therefore, students must obtain a grade of 750 in the TOEIC to be awarded their degree.

Continuation of study

The degree is run in collaboration with a group of laboratories from the university, as will as several engineering schools and partner establishments. This base ensures the possibility of undertaking a PhD with one of the two doctoral schools associated with the degree: SMAE or EDITE.
 
Employment

The main option is an engineering career in industry, where the multidisciplinary character of engineering is greatly appreciated.

Organization

Electronics and mechanics are organized in a very similar way, with a common base of 21 ECTS in M1 (Semester 1) followed by an orientation (end of S1 and S2) in one of the future M2 specializations.

Two internships, in the second semesters of both years, ensure    a balance between theoretical and experimental training and a high level of contact with the professional world.

In first year there is therefore a choice between M1 electronics and M1 Mechanics.

Well-targeted public
  • These specializations are open to continuing education candidates.
  • In 2nd year, students from other establishments – universities or schools, French or foreign – may be admitted if they can justify to the admissions panel that they meet the prerequisites. Moreover, there are specific links with certain European universities.
  • The mechanics specializations are open in 1st year to Bachelor of mechanics or physics graduates or equivalent.
  • The electronics specializations are open in 1st year to Bachelor of electronics, physics or computer science graduates or equivalent if prerequisites are met.
