Electronic systems and computer systems specialization (M2)

The SESI specialization trains specialists in the hardware and software design of omnipresent embedded systems, controlling all types of equipment (automobile, telecommunications, games, household electrical goods, etc.). This specialization requires skills in both electronics and computer science. It is the result of combining the ACSI specialization (Architecture and Design of Integrated Systems) of the Computer Science course and the ACSI specialization of the Science of the Engineer course of the Pierre & Marie Curie University.

Considering the extremely fast evolution of the design tools and methods, research in this field is of a very applied nature since there is only a short time between innovation and transfer to industry. The industrial and research study programs are therefore only differentiated by the choice of the type of internship (laboratory or company) which is undertaken at the start of the M2 year.
In the SESIU specialization, different programs around embedded systems are tackled: the combined hardware and software design of chip integrated systems, the development of methods and algorithms of specification, modeling, design, checking and testing of integrated circuits and systems and the design, modeling and prototyping of integrated applications ranging from sensors to software applications.

The research laboratories associated with the specialization are, in particular, the LIP6 – ALSOC, CIAN and SYEL (UPMC) teams and the LTCI (Telecom ParisTech).
The SESI specialization proposes two skills profiles on completion of the course easily identified on the jobs' market, system skills (design of high-level systems, multi-processors, combined hardware/software design, embedded operating systems) and circuit skills (design of circuits and integrated systems, CAD, electronic systems, digital and analog architectures). These two profiles will be mainly identified in the second year of the Master's by choosing courses which are more system orientated or more circuit orientated.

For the internship, students are asked to choose at the start of the M2 year if they are aiming to begin their career at the Master's degree level which implies an industrial placement or if they are aiming to begin their professional careers at the doctorate level which involves a research internship in one of the laboratories associated with the SEI specialization or in an academic laboratory.

Opportunities

  • Industrial sector: Engineer, IC Designer, Hardware engineer, architect, Systems Engineer, Embedded software Engineer. Then technical consultant or project manager.
  • Research sector: researcher or R&D engineer, university lecturer-researcher, researcher for CNRS, INRIA, CEA etc.
Well-targeted public

With a bachelor's degree in computer science or electronics or holding an equivalent diploma.

At the M2 level, a possibility of accepting engineers wishing to specialize. Possibility also of accepting final year engineering students as part of the agreements made between UPMC and other higher education establishments.
